Ann Arbor pest control

We are Michigan's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Ann Arbor raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Ann Arbor pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
  • If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
  • Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
  • When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation

Ann Arbor Raccoon Control Tip: How Well Will Repellents Work Against Raccoons?
There are several different types of products that are available when it comes to dealing with raccoons in and around your home, and one of the most common on the shelves of your local hardware stores and garden centers are the repellents. These are usually chemicals or devices that are designed to be able to drive wild animals such as raccoons away from your property, without having to come into direct contact with them. The big question with this type of product is how effective can it be at keeping raccoons away?

Audio Repellent Devices
The audio devices are quite simple in terms of their theory, but they actually come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, and also can range significantly in terms of the overall costs of the system. Essentially, these devices emit a high pitched sound outside the hearing range of most people, which is said to be uncomfortable for the animals to hear. These devices will usually either deliver a burst of sound when linked to a movement sensor, or there are systems that can produce a permanent stream of sound to drive raccoons and other animals away.

Chemical And Scent Repellents
Another of the main types of repellent available is the chemical products, and these are usually provided either as a liquid to be sprayed over a particular area, or in granular form to be sprinkled around that area. These repellents are usually made to have a strong pungent smell to drive the raccoons away, but you may also find some that mimic the scent produced by a raccoon's predators in order to help keep the animal away.

Raccoon Eviction Fluid
Eviction fluid is a slightly less common product that is used to drive raccoons away, and it is actually made by concentrating the scent from the urine of male raccoons. This is designed to work in situations where you have a female and a litter of young kits, as male raccoons are known for killing baby animals that aren't their own offspring, which is why this can cause some females to leave the area to another location where the male raccoons aren't active. In order to be effective, the eviction fluid does need to be applied in a confined area such as a small attic, and preferably applied near the raccoon's nest.

The Problems With Most Raccoon Repellents
The key problem with using repellents is that they do depend in most cases on the level of inconvenience of nuisance caused by the repellent being more important to the raccoon than the factors attracting them to a particular area. In many cases, the sound or smell of the repellents will not be enough to drive these animals away from the property. Eviction fluid is a slightly different proposition however, as it indicates a direct threat to any baby raccoons present, and this can be successful at driving away a female raccoon and her kits when they are present in a confined space.

Alternative Methods Of Dealing With A Raccoon Problem
It isn't just repellents that can be used to deal with a raccoon infestation however, and the most effective solution in many cases is to take direct action to catch and remove the raccoon. The cage trap is widely acknowledged as the most efficient way of catching a raccoon, and is usually placed with some bait in an area where the raccoon can be seen to be active. Once trapped, check for any baby raccoons, and then relocate the raccoon to an area that is well away from your home, and also well away from any other domestic properties where the animal could become a nuisance.
